2018 - Just like the weather!
The UK equity market has fallen significantly over 2018 and bond markets have generally flat lined. However property and the US equity market have performed well. Meanwhile, corporate bond yields have risen and inflation expectations have remained relatively benign. But, many are faced with an increase in liabilities due to having to address the effect of inequalities caused by Guaranteed Minimum Pensions (GMPs). GMP conundrum...not quite solved
The High Court recently handed down its judgement in an important pensions case (Lloyds Banking Group Pensions Trustees Ltd v Lloyds Bank plc and others), concluding that trustees must adjust scheme benefits for sex-equalisation of Guaranteed Minimum Pensions (GMPs). So, can trustees push on and adjust benefits to address GMP inequalities?

"Where are you goin' to? Do you know?"
Obviously they have been playing Diana Ross’s 1975 hit in the DWP offices and the chorus above has struck a chord. We don’t yet have very much detail on how DWP or tPR intend to improve the operation of the scheme funding regime - Chapter 2 of the recent DB White Paper. Life expectancy continues to fall - a trend or blip?
The latest mortality research shows that life expectancy is still increasing, but at a slower rate than previously thought. Life expectancies at age 65 are now lower than they were 3 years ago. Is this a continuing trend or a blip?

What! No cavalry?
In every Hollywood blockbuster, just as it looks like the hero is doomed, the “cavalry” appear to save the day. These are dark days for UK defined benefit pension schemes, with large funding deficits putting pressure on many schemes. Trustees and sponsors are looking for the cavalry to appear in the form of gilt yields rising back to “normal” levels...Will the cavalry arrive?

Will your PPF levy fall?
The PPF has finalised its levy rules for the 2018/19 levy year. The headline total amount they hope to raise in 2018/19 will be 10% lower than last year, at £550m. So the average levy should fall by 10%. Great news given the pressures on scheme funding. Although the impact for an individual scheme may be very different from the average!
